Question
Usually it takes how many days/weeks / months for the reduction in white blood cells in the body. What complications would arise in the case of a person suffering from lower wbc?
Answer
A low WBC count could be due to a variety of reasons such as acute viral infections, typhoid fever, chronic diseases such as HIV, cancers etc and even suppression due to drugs or increased destruction as by the spleen. The white blood cells are made up of different cells such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes and basophils. The cells have a life span of approximately 2-7 days in the blood. Thus at a time new cells are being formed and the old ones are getting destroyed. The cells become low when either the formation of cells decreases or the rate of destruction increases. Thus a change can occur in the WBC count within 2-7 days. The WBCs are the armies of the human body and fight against the germs that cause infection. A low neutrophil count would have the body vulnerable against bacterial infections whereas a low lymphocyte count would make the body vulnerable against viral infections, fungal infections and even bacterial infections such as TB.
