Question
I have pre-mature baby. Baby got Jaundice 2-3 days after birth and is being currently given phototherapy treatment. His weight was 1245 grams at the time of birth. As per the doctor is not able to take the feeds and is vomiting out whatever is being fed. Is it because of any infection or what? Is it common in the pre-term babies or its something of concern?
Answer
Since the baby is premature and is low birth weight and not tolerating feeds, one should rule out infection such as Necrotising enterocolitis.
However, it is also known that very low birth weight babies may not take feeds properly due to incoordination between sucking and swallowing and hence tube feeding may be required.
