Question
My 9 years old daughter will need brace because of her crowded teeth. Her dentist said that she is not ready for brace, but ready for space maintainer. I just wonder whether the space maintainer is necessary for a 9 years old girl. Thank you very much! John.
Answer
Space maintainers are used for "maintaining space" which is usually due to early loss of a deciduous tooth. If she has had an extraction earlier, she would need to maintain the space, so the adjacent erupting permanent teeth doesn't tip into the space and thereby block the available space for the erupting tooth.
