Question
I was wondering if a 13 month old child receives the MMR and varicella vaccines twice within 2 months are there any potential problems to be aware of? I can't find an answer to this on the CDC site or anywhere else I've searched. This has happened to my great nephew and I'd like to know what to watch for if anything. Also, since he's gotten both twice now, should he be re vaccinated with the MMR later at all? Thanks for your help.
Answer
First and foremost were both the vaccines given together on the same day? If yes, there is nothing to worry about. Ideally both vaccines can be given together or if given on separate days, a gap of at least 4-6 weeks should be kept between 2 vaccines. There is no need to repeat varicella vaccine or MMR vaccine as they are known to give lifelong immunity. There is no harm if the vaccines have been given twice. Regarding re vaccination with MMR vaccine, one must follow the policy of your country. If your academy of pediatrics recommends 2 vaccines, you may have to follow that as the disease prevalence is different in different countries and hence there are different schedules of vaccination in various countries.
