Question
My son will be 7 yrs old next week. He has bilateral hydronephrosis caused by secondary grade 4 VUR. He has hyperactive bladder in which his is too small, rigid and it is at extremely high pressure when he voids. He is on Ditropan and Septra. My question is how high is the success rate for treating this medically? He will need to have bladder augmentation, if medication is not successful.
Answer
Surgical treatment would be required if there is damage occurring to the kidney. Your doctor would be monitoring him periodically with growth, blood pressure, blood tests, number of urine infections and renal scans to determine if there is extensive damage occurring to the kidney. One has to evaluate all these before going in for surgery.
