NUTRITION IN CHILDREN
MATERNAL AND CHILD UNDERNUTRITION : CONSEQUENCES FOR ADULT HEALTH AND HUMAN CAPITAL

This study reviews the association of maternal and child Undernutrition with risk of adult diseases by analyzing data from 5 countries - Brazil, Guatemala, India, Philippines and South Africa. It is found that poor fetal growth or stunting due to undernutrition in the first 2 years of life leads to shorter adult height, lower attained schooling, lower economic productivity and decreased off spring birth weight. It is also seen that children who are undernourished in first 2 years of life and who put on weight rapidly later in childhood are at high risk for high blood glucose levels, higher blood pressure and harmful lipid profile as adults. This paper provides strong evidence that adequate Nutrition in utero and in the first 2 years of life is essential to prevent adult related chronic diseases.
