DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and AA (arachidonic acid) are components of breast milk and are important components of the brain and DHA is a major component of the retina. It has been found that breast feeding leads to better cognitive and visual function subsequently; however it is insufficient to justify that DHA and AA in breast milk are responsible for this apparent advantage. However studies of DHA (and AA) - supplemented formulas versus unsupplemented formulas have shown clear advantage of supplemented formulas of DHA & AA on visual acuity and neurodevelopmental status.

Plasma, erythrocyte and brain lipid levels of DHA are lower in infants whose diets do not contain DHA. The breast milk content of LC-PUFAS is dependent on maternal diet. Thus some infants may receive sufficient LC-PUFA and some may not depending on maternal diet and LC-PUFA stores. Thus, supplementation with LC-PUFA can be supported.
