What are probiotics?
Probiotics are good bacteria which when given in humans confer a health benefit on the humans.
How do probiotics work?
Probiotics when eaten, prevent the growth of bad bacteria (disease causing bacteria) in the intestines. Thus disease forming bugs are prevented from infecting the body.
In which conditions are probiotics useful?
Probiotics are increasingly being used for treatment of diarrhea and for prevention of antibiotic associated diarrhea. It also helps in keeping remission in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, reduction of incidence of atopic dermatitis in infants, control symptoms of lactose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome. There have been reports of improved growth in undernourished children, decreased incidence of dental caries and respiratory infections.

Commonly used probiotics are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in food supplements. Sacchromyces is basically used for diarrhea.
How safe are probiotics?
With the exception of one strain belonging to the Lactobacillus rhamnosus species, lactobacilli and bifidobacteria used for food production are "generally recognized as safe" (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration of the USA. However, probiotics should not be given to children who are seriously or chronically ill until the safety of administration has been established.
