Penciclovir

Mechanism :

Penciclovir triphosphate inhibits HSV polymerase competitively with deoxyguanosine triphosphate, thereby inhibiting herpes viral DNA synthesis.


Indication :

  • Topical treatment of recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores)

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity to the penciclovir or any component of the formulation.


Dosing :

≥12 years:
Apply cream (1%) at the first appearance of cold sore every 2 hours during waking hours for 4 days.

Adverse Effect :

Erythema, headache, application site reaction, altered sense of smell, erythematous rash, local anaesthesia, localized edema, oropharyngeal edema, pain, paresthesia, pruritus.


Interaction :

Talimogene Laherparepvec: Antiherpetic Antivirals may diminish the therapeutic effect of Talimogene Laherparepvec.



Hepatic Dose :

No dose adjustment recommended.
