Pyrethrins and pyrethroids
They are extracted from chrysanthemum plant and used as insect repellants and pesticides. They are available as sprays, dusts, powders and mats
Route :
Ingestion, inhalation, skin contact
Fatal Dose :
1gm/kg body weight
Fatal Period :
2 to 5 days
Mechanism of action :
They prolong the inactivation of sodium channel by binding it in the inactive state
Clinical Picture :
•Skin contact causes dermatitis and blistering
•Paraesthesias, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea
•Inhalation causes rhinorrhea, sore throat, wheezing and dyspnoea
•Fasciculations, hyperthermia, altered mental status
•Convulsions and coma
Treatment :
•Gastric lavage with activated charcoal
•Oils and fats to be avoided
•Atropine and oximes are contraindicated
•Skin should be washed
