Desflurane
Mechanism :
desflurane enhances inhibitory postsynaptic channel activity and inhibits excitatory synaptic activity resulting in general anesthesia.
Indication :
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity to desflurane, other halogenated agents, or any component of the formulation; known or suspected genetic susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia; patients in whom general anesthesia is contraindicated; induction of anesthesia in pediatric patients; history of moderate to severe hepatic impairment following anesthesia with desflurane or other halogenated agents and not otherwise explained.
Dosing :
Inhaled concentrations of 5.2% to 10% with or without nitrous oxide.
Adverse Effect :
Nausea, vomiting, cough, breath holding, apnea, decreased oxygen saturations, bradycardia, hypertension, arrhythmia, sialorrhea, laryngospasm.
Interaction :
Blood Pressure Lowering Agents: May enhance the hypotensive effect of Hypotension-Associated Agents.
CNS Depressants: May enhance the adverse/toxic effect of other CNS Depressants.
Epinephrine (Systemic): Inhalational Anesthetics may enhance the arrhythmogenic effect of epinephrine.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
