Dextrose

Mechanism :

This medication is an intravenous (IV) solution used to supply fluids and calories to the body. It is also used as a diluent for other IV medications.


Indication :

  • Hypoglycemia in premature infants
  • Insulin induced hypoglycemia
  • Nutritional support

Contraindications :

Solutions containing dextrose may be contraindicated in patients with known allergy to corn or corn products.

Dehydration.


Dosing :

Hypoglycemia:

Premature infants: 0.1-0.2 g/kg/dose, followed by continuous infusion at the rate of 4-6 mg/kg/min.

Infants:

<6 months: 0.25-0.5 g/kg/dose intravenously, Max: 25 g/dose.

>6 months: 0.5: 1 g/kg/dose intravenously, Max: 25 g/dose.

Adolescents: 10-25 g as 20-50 ml as 50% solution intravenously OR 4-20 g oral dose stat; can be repeated after 15 minutes if hypoglycemia persists.


Adverse Effect :

Local injection site reactions, excessive urination, nausea, hyperosmolar syndrome.


Interaction :

Do not administer concurrently with corticosteroids.



Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
