Silymarin

Synonym :

Milk Thistle

Mechanism :

It is a hepatobiliary plant product used in the treatment of infective hepatitis that acts by increasing the synthesis of glutathione in the liver, which is required for the expulsion of toxins.


Indication :

  • Herb prescribed for liver disease.

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity.


Dosing :

Safety and efficacy not established in children.
Adults:
140 mg PO TID
Children:
5-10 mg/kg/day PO in 2-3 divided doses.

Adverse Effect :

Headache, diarrhea, abdominal bloating, flatulence, loss of appetite, nausea and stomach upset.


Interaction :

No significant interactions found.



Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
