Parents Eduction for Umbilical Hernia
1) Most of the umbilical hernia closes by 4-5 years of age. So it is advisable, not to intervene before that if the hernia is asymptomatic.
2) Use of pressure dressing is unlikely to help in early closure of the umbilical hernia.
3) Use of pressure dressing may cause irritation of the skin around the umbilicus.
4) If your child complains about pain at the site of umbilicus or any symptoms like abdominal distention or vomiting, immediately report to the pediatric surgeon.
5) Surgery is the only options when the hernia does not regress on its own.
6) Umbilical hernia repair is a safe surgery.
7) If the umbilical hernia does not regress by 4 years of age, please get it repaired before the child goes to school.
