Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine
Mechanism :
Japanese Encephalitis Virus Vaccine Inactivated, is a sterile, lyophilized vaccine for subcutaneous use, prepared by inoculating mice intracerebrally with Japanese encephalitis.
Indication :
- Prophylaxis against Japanese Encephalitis
Contraindications :
Adverse reactions to a prior dose of JE vaccine manifesting as generalized urticaria and angioedema are considered to be contraindications to vaccination. JE vaccine is produced in mouse brains and should not be administered to persons with a proven or suspected hypersensitivity to proteins of rodent or neural origin. Hypersensitivity to thiomersal is a contraindication for its use, also in children <1-year-old.
Dosing :
Under 2 months:
Safety and efficacy not established
2 months-3 years:
0.25 ml/dose given IM as two doses four weeks apart.
Above 3 years:
0.5 ml/dose given IM as two doses four weeks apart.
Booster Dose:
May be given 11 months after primary immunization in high risk groups
14 months-3 years:
0.25 ml single dose
Above 3 years:
0.5 ml single dose.
All vaccinations to be completed a week prior to visiting endemic area.
Adverse Effect :
Commonly seen are hypersensitivity reactions such as urticaria, angioneurotic edema, hypotension and dyspnea. Recipients must be kept under observation for 30 minutes and should be departed to a place without adequate medical facilities only after 10 days. Injection site reactions, fever and diarrhea may be observed.
Interaction :
Although no significant interactions have been recorded, it probably should not be given with other vaccines.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
