Measles Vaccine

Mechanism :

It is a live virus vaccine used in the prevention of measles. The vaccine acts by inducing immune response in the body thus providing long-term protection.

Indication :

  • All children above 9 months of age to prevent measles.

Contraindications :

Allergy to measles virus, gelatin or neomycin, reduced immunity due to cancer, concurrent infection, or immunosuppressants, HIV or those taking monoclonal antibodies.

Dosing :

It is recommended in 2 doses at nine months and 15 months of age 0.5 ml SC on outer aspect of arm along with rubella vaccine. It is contraindicated in patients with neomycin allergy.

Adverse Effect :

Fever, rash, coryza, malaise, pain at injection site, headache, lymphadenopathy, myalgia, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, thrombocytopenia, encephalitis, optic neuritis, Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Interaction :

Corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, Vitamin A, interferon.

Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
