Tropicamide

Mechanism :

It is a potent and quickest acting antimuscarinic drug used to dilate the pupil in cases of some eye procedures.


Indication :

  • Pupillary dilation
  • Refraction

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity. Narrow-angle glaucoma or shallow anterior chamber.


Dosing :

Instill 1 to 2 drops (0.5%) 15 to 20 minutes before exam; may repeat every 30 minutes as needed.

Adverse Effect :

Increased intraocular pressure, severe CNS disturbances in children, transient stinging, dry mouth, blurred vision, photophobia, tachycardia, headache, allergic reactions.


Interaction :

May antagonise effects of ophthalmic carbachol, pilocarpine, or cholinesterase inhibitors.
Potentially Fatal: May antagonise effects of ophthalmic carbachol, pilocarpine, or cholinesterase inhibitors.



Hepatic Dose :

No dose adjustment recommended.
