They are used as anti – anxiety and muscle relaxing agents
The commonly used preparations are: Diazepam, flurazepam, chlordiazepoxide, nitrazepam, oxazepam, alprazolam, lorazepam

Route :
Ingestion
Fatal Dose :
60 to 100ml
Fatal Period :
few hrs
Mechanism of action :
They enhance the inhibitory action of neurotransmitter GABA an the brain
Clinical Picture :
• Vertigo, slurred speech, nystagmus, diplopia, dysarthria, ataxia
• Sedation, somnolence, coma

Treatment :
• Gastric lavage with sodium bicarbonate
• Activated charcoal
• high colonic irrigation
• Calcium gluconate and dextrose i.v.
• Symptomatic
