Meningococcal Vaccine

Synonyms :

Men ACWY-D, MenACWY-CRM, MenB-4C, MenB-FHbp, Meningococcal Group B Vaccine, Meningococcal Polysaccharide Conjugate Vaccine, Meningococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine, MPSV4

Mechanism :

It is a polysaccharide used to enhance the immunity of an individual against meningococcal meningitis. It is used during meningococcal epidemics and in high risk patients like splenectomised patients, patients with sickle cell disease and nephrotic syndrome.


Indication :

  • Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine is used to protect adults and children especially those in endemic areas to protect against Meningococcal groups A, C, Y and W-135,but not Group B.
  • Asplenia
  • HIV

Contraindications :

Symptoms of allergic reaction; Difficulty in breathing or swallowing; Hives; Itching, especially of feet or hands; Reddening of skin, especially around ears; Swelling of eyes, face, or inside of nose; Unusual tiredness or weakness (sudden and severe).


Dosing :

Meningococcal polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-D):
Routine vaccination
9-23 months: 2 doses of 0.5 ml IM at least 3 months apart.
>11 years: 0.5 ml IM in adolescents aged 11-12 years. A booster dose is given at 16 years. It is contraindicated in children below 2 years of age.
Routine immunization with conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-CRM):
>2 months: Four-dose series IM at 2, 4, 6, and 12 months of age.
9-23 months: 2 doses of 0.5 ml IM at least 3 months apart.
2-10 years: Single dose of 0.5 ml IM.
>11 years: 0.5 ml IM. A booster dose is given at 16 years.
Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (MPSV4):
Asplenia:
>2 years:
1 doses of 0.5 ml IM.
Meningococcal group B vaccine (MenB-4C):
10-17 years:
2 doses of 0.5 ml to be given IM 1 month apart.
Meningococcal group B vaccine (MenB-FHbp):
10-17 years:
3 doses of 0.5 ml to be given IM at 0, 1, 6 months.

Adverse Effect :

More common: injection site reactions. Less common: chills, headache, general feeling of discomfort or illness, fever, hard lump at place of injection, tiredness or weakness, anorexia, arthralgia


Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
