Haemophilus B Vaccine

Synonym :

Hib vaccine

Mechanism :

It is a polysaccharide vaccine for intramuscular application. It is used to protect against serious Haemophilus infections like meningitis, epiglottis. It is conjugated to either the diphtheria or tetanus toxoid or the meningococcal protein.


Indication :

  • Hemophilus influenzae type B-Invasive disease prophylaxis
  • Asplenia

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine is a contraindication to use of this vaccine.


Dosing :

Given at 6-8 weeks, 10-12 weeks and 14-16 weeks of age. Single booster dose at 15 months of age. Children 13-48 months of age and older children who have not received the vaccine need receive only one dose to develop immunity.


Adverse Effect :

Reactions at the injection site like swelling and redness may appear within 3-4 hours and resolve within 24 hours. The incidence of these effects declines with later doses.


Interaction :

DTaP: Should not be mixed with DTaP as this may reduce the protective value of Hib.



Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
