Imaging studies, including a barium swallow and CT thorax, revealed that the girl's dysphagia was due to an extrinsic compression of the esophagus by an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). The ARSA was found to be the last branch of the aortic arch, causing the indentation and compression.
