Methylene Blue

Mechanism :

It is used in the treatment of methemoglobinemia. It works by converting methemoglobin to a more efficient type of hemoglobin to better carry oxygen throughout the body.

Indication :

  • Treatment of methemoglobinemia
  • Urinary tract infections. It works as a mild antiseptic to cure the urinary tract infection
  • Methylene blue is also used as a staining agent to make certain body fluids and tissues easier to view during surgery or on an x-ray.

Contraindications :

Renal Impairment, Hypersensitivity, Intraspinal or intrathecal injection, SC injection, Caution in G 6 PD deficiency.

Dosing :

1-2 mg/kg/dose of 1% solution IV over 5-30 minutes.
Repeat after one hour if required.

Adverse Effect :

Pain in extremity, chromaturia, dysgeusia, feeling hot, dizziness, hyperhidrosis, nausea, skin discolouration may occur. Vomiting, hypertension, headache, paraesthesia. Bluish discolouration of urine and faeces frequently occurs.

Photosensitivity; serotonergic effects, strong.
Amitriptyline, Amoxapine, Bupropion, Buspirone, Citalopram, Clomipramine, Desipramine, Desvenlafaxine, Doxepin, Duloxetine, Escitalopram, Fluoxetine, Fluvoxamine, Imipramine, Isocarboxazid, Levomilnacipran, Milnacipran, Mirtazapine, Nefazodone, Nortriptyline, Paroxetine, Phenelzine, Procarbazine, Protriptyline, Selegiline Transdermal, Sertraline, Tranylcypromine, Trazodone, Trimipramine, Venlafaxine, Vilazodone, Vortioxetine.

Hepatic Dose :

No dose adjustments are recommended.
