Norfloxacin
Mechanism :
It is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic similar to nalidixic acid but is less toxic than nalidixic acid. It is effective against many gram-negative bacteria like Escherichia coli and is used in the treatment of diarrhea and UTI. It is also available as antibiotic eye drops.
Indication :
- Urinary Tract Infection treatment
- Gonorrhoea
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, prolonged QT interval, hypokalemia, myasthenia gravis.
Dosing :
4-12 mg/kg/day PO in 2 divided doses.
Adverse Effect :
Headache, dizziness, rash, GI upset and sleep disturbances.
Interaction :
Interaction Characteristics:
CYP1A2 inhibitor, weak, GI absorption enhanced by GLP-2 receptor agonist, alters GI flora, binds to polyvalent cations, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia, lowers seizure threshold, photosensitivity, prolongs QT interval probable.
Contraindicated:
Amiodarone, BCG live intravesical, cisapride, disopyramide, dofetilide, dronedarone, ibutilide, procainamide, quinidine (antiarrhythmic), sotalol, thioridazine, ziprasidone.
