Can Typhoid, Chicken Pox, Hepatitis A vaccines be given along with DPT, though in different sites? If YES, then is there any shortcoming to it, however minor it may be?

Expert Answer :
Yes, they can be given on the same day at different sites. However, that would mean 4 pricks, one in each limb. This is very difficult to give and also manage. Besides, the child may get a fever due to DPT, a rash due to the chickenpox vaccine and may be more uncomfortable with so many vaccines given together.

DPT + other vaccines, same day?

Yes! Typhoid, chicken pox & hep A can all be given with DPT, each at a separate site.

Small drawbacks:

- More sore, red, swollen spots

- Fever a bit more likely (DPT, varicella)

- Hard to tell which vaccine caused a reaction

- Infants have limited injection sites (keep 1 inch apart)

- Live vaccines (chicken pox, MMR): same day, or wait 4 weeks

Tips:

Use different limbs, give DPT last, and ask your pediatrician if unsure.
