Benzyl Peroxide

Mechanism :

Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial and keratolytic agent. Benzoyl peroxide is an antibacterial agent which is effective against Propionibacterium acnes. This action is responsible for its usefulness in acne.


Indication :

• Acne


Contraindications :

Should not be used by patients having known sensitivity to benzoyl peroxide or any of its components. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth and use with caution over sensitive areas.


Dosing :

Topical 2.5%: 1-3 times daily sparingly for 15 min.


Adverse Effect :

Irritation and contact dermatitis.


Interaction :

When dapsone (topical) and benzoyl peroxide are administered together it may result in a yellow discolouration of the skin and facial hair due to an unspecified interaction mechanism and thus should be monitored closely.
