Boric acid
 Mechanism : 
It is made from borax and is mainly used as a local anti-infective agent. It is non-irritating and can be used as an aqueous solution for an eye wash, mouth wash or even as a dusting powder. Boric acid has weak bacteriostatic and fungistatic properties. It is used for ophthalmic irrigation to cleanse, refresh and soothe irritated eyes; for removal of loose foreign material, air pollutants or chlorinated water. However, it must be used only topically.
 Indication : 
 Contraindications : 
Hypersensitivity to boric acid, Children less than 2 years of age.
Dosing : 
1.25% w/v drops.
1-2 drops instilled into each ear 3-4 times a day.
 Adverse Effect : 
Psoriasiform lesions, bullae and, intense erythematous eruptions, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, convulsions, delirium, coma, acute tubular necrosis, oliguria and anuria.
 Interaction : 
There are no known drug interactions with topical boric acid.
 Hepatic Dose : 
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
