Mechanism :

Cefadroxil is a semisynthetic first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic more effective against gram positive bacteria intended for oral administration for skin infections and respiratory tract infections. Cephalosporins are bactericidal because of their inhibition of cell-wall synthesis.

Indication :

  • Respiratory tract infections
  • Pyoderma
  • Otitis media
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Cystitis
  • Urethritis

Contraindications :

Cefadroxil is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics.

Dosing :

30 mg/kg/24 hours in 2 divided doses for 10 days. Max: 1 gm/dose.
Endocarditis prophylaxis:
50 mg/kg 1 hour before procedure (dental) orally. Max: 2 g.

Adverse Effect :

Pseudomembranous colitis, dyspepsia, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, rash, urticaria, angioedema, pruritus, hepatic dysfunction, moderate transient neutropenia, fever, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, serum sickness, arthralgia.

Interaction :

Cephalosporin: Positive direct Coombs tests have been reported during treatment with the cephalosporin antibiotics.
Probenecid: Prolongs serum penicillin levels by slowing the rate of excretion by competitively inhibiting renal tubular secretion.
