A 3-day-old child has S. bilirubin 16.2 and direct bilirubin 2.2. Weight is 2.7 kg. What should be the approach?

Expert Answer :
Get the liver enzymes done. If high, rule out hepatitis. Also, check if the stools are pale in color. If not, start phototherapy and keep a watch on both indirect and direct bilirubin. If direct bilirubin is rising, rule out neonatal cholestasis.

Consider it direct hyperbilirubinaemia no matter what is the age! She should be investigated accordingly sepsis( perinatal) /obstructive cholengiopathy/ drugs etc
