Valparin, gardinal, eptoin, tegretal, these are four common drugs used in seizures. Which of the combinations have synergistic action and can be used together, and which drugs should not be used together?
5
Expert Answer :
Tegretol and Gardinal, when taken together, can cause increased levels of Gardinal, similar to the interaction with Eptoin and Tegretol. Valparin is ok to use with any of the other three and is synergistic with Tegretol. Do not use Tegretol for a generalized seizure like absence epilepsy, as it can severely worsen the epilepsy. Additive side effects need to be monitored with eptoin and valparin, both lowering platelet count, the first three causing liver side effects.
