Malathion

Mechanism :
Malathion is an organophosphate agent which acts as a pediculicide by inhibiting cholinesterase activity in vivo.
Indication :
Contraindications :
Contraindicated in neonates and infants because their scalps are more permeable and may have increased absorption of malathion, in individuals known to be sensitive to malathion. Avoid contact with eyes. Do not use on broken or secondarily infected skin. Do not use orally.
Dosing :
Available as 0.5% lotion. Medical supervision is required for children <6 months of age.
Scabies:
Apply to whole body excluding head and neck, let it dry, rinse after 1 day. Children <2 years should apply a thin film to scalp, face and ears, avoiding eyes and mouth.
Head lice:
Apply to dry hair, leave in for 8-12 hours. Repeat after 7 days only if live lice are found again.

Malathion has been shown to be irritating to the skin and scalp. Accidental contact with the eyes can result in mild conjunctivitis. Occasionally, it may also cause stinging sensation, skin rash, blistering and peeling of the skin, pain, reddened skin, swelling, chemical burns.
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustments are recommended.
