Carbamide

Mechanism :

Carbamide peroxide, also called urea peroxide, is an oxidising agent, consisting of hydrogen peroxide compounded with urea.


Indication :

  • Teeth whitening
  • Canker sores or gum irritation
  • Ear wax removal

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity.


Dosing :

Use in children >2 years.
Canker sores or gum irritation:
Apply several drops to affected area, expectorate out after 2-3 minutes, OR
Place 10 drops on tongue, mix with saliva, swish in mouth for several minutes, then expectorate. May repeat up to 4 times/day.
Oral hygiene:
15% liquid: Apply to toothbrush, cover with toothpaste, brush & expectorate.
Ear wax removal: Available as otic 6.5% solution:
1 to 5 drops twice daily for up to 4 days (Max: 10 drops twice daily); individualize the dose according to patient size.

Adverse Effect :

The chemical is a skin, eye and respiratory irritant. It is also corrosive and causes burns. It doesn’t hurt at 10% concentration (3% peroxide equivalent) but it does hurt at 35% equivalent, causing white chemical burns on skin and gums alike.


Interaction :

With allogeneic cultured keratinocytes/fibroblasts in in bovine collagen: Decreases the effect of allogeneic cultured keratinocytes/fibroblasts in in bovine collagen.



Hepatic Dose :

No dosage adjustments are recommended.
