Pentobarbital Sodium

Mechanism :

It is a shorter acting barbiturate used as a sedative or a hypnotic.


Indication :

  • Sedation
  • Status Epilepticus

Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity, Liver function impairment, Latent porphyria, Chronic or acute pain.


Dosing :

2-6 mg/kg/day PO, PR, IM in 3 divided doses or as slow IV. Maximum dose: 100 mg.

Adverse Effect :

Hypotension (associated with rapid administration), hypothermia, oliguria, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory depression, CNS depression/excitation and vomiting. It is contraindicated in patients with porphyria.


Interaction :

Barbiturates: Enzyme inducers decrease effect of concomitantly administered drugs



Hepatic Dose :

Dose adjustment guidelines are not available. Dose reduction is recommended. Use with caution and drug should not be used in patients who have hepatic encephalopathy.
