Mechanism :

It is an antibiotic similar to metronidazole, but with a longer duration of action. It is used in the treatment of amoebiasis, giardiasis, trichomoniasis and anaerobic infections.

Indication :

  • Amoebiasis
  • Trichomoniasis
  • Giardiasis
  • Anaerobic infections
  • Trichomonas Vaginilis infections

Contraindications :

Neurological disease, Blood dyscrasias, First trimester of pregnancy, Hypersensitivity, Caution in chronic alcoholics.

Dosing :

40 mg/kg/day twice daily for 2-3 days PO.

Adverse Effect :

GI discomfort, pain in the abdomen, vertigo, headache, skin rash.

Interaction :

Alcohol: Disulfiram like reaction with alcohol.
Phenobarbitone, Rifampin: Reduce its effect.
Warfarin: Lithium toxicity is induced.
Cimetidine: Reduces action of ornidazole.

Hepatic Dose :

Mild or moderate impairment (Child-Pugh class A or B): No dosage adjustment necessary; use with caution and monitor for adverse events
Severe impairment (Child-Pugh class C):
Immediate release tablets, injection: Reduce dose by 50%
Extended release tablets: Use is not recommended.
