Papaverine
Mechanism :
Smooth muscle spasmolytic producing a generalized smooth muscle relaxation including vasodilation, GI sphincter relaxation, bronchiolar muscle relaxation, and potentially a depressed myocardium.
Indication :
- For intravascular catheter occlusion prophylaxis
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity to papaverine or any component.
Complete atrioventricular block, Parkinson’s disease.
Dosing :
Safety and efficacy not established in children.
Intra-Arterial dosage:
30 mg of papaverine added to 250 mL of arterial catheter infusion solution (0.9% or 0.45% NaCl with
heparin 1 unit/mL) infused continuously at a rate of 1 mL/hour into a peripheral arterial catheter. Generally, avoid use in extremely premature neonates during the immediate period after birth when the risk of developing intracranial hemorrhage is highest.
Adverse Effect :
Tachycardia, BP changes, flushing, dizziness, drowsiness, depression, malaise, sweating, raised intracranial pressure, pruritus, rash, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, nausea vomiting, priapism.
Interaction :
Serious - Use Alternative:
Sodium oxybate.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
