Ascorbic acid

Synonym :

Vitamin C

Mechanism :

Necessary for collagen formation and tissue repair in the body; involved in some oxidation-reduction as well as many other metabolic reactions.


Indication :

• Prevention and treatment of scurvy

• Increase iron excretion during deferoxamine administration


Contraindications :

Hypersensitivity to ascorbic acid or any component.


Dosing :

RDA:

0-6 months: 40 mg (~6 mg/kg/day)

6-12 months: 50 mg (~6 mg/kg/day)

1-3 years: 15 mg

3-8 years: 25 mg

8-13 years: 45 mg

13-18 years: Males-75 mg, Females-65 mg.

Scurvy:

100 mg (Oral) thrice daily for 1 week. Then 100 mg (Oral) everyday until condition resolves (1-3 months).

Increase iron excretion during deferoxamine administration:

100-200 mg/day during deferoxamine therapy.


Adverse Effect :

Flushing, fainting, dizziness, headache, fatigue. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, diarrhea, hyperoxaluria. In thalassemia patients, it may increase the iron overload state.


Interaction :

Aspirin, iron, oral contraceptives (increases estrogen levels), decreases warfarin effect.
