Menadione

Mechanism :
Menadione acts as a vitamin K analogue, acting as a cofactor in the synthesis of Factor II, VII, IX, X in the liver. The Vitamin K analogue is needed in the step of gamma carboxylation of these factors which renders them capable of binding ca ions to phospholipid surfaces which is essential for the coagulation cascade.
Indication :
Contraindications :
Newborns and G 6 PD deficiency patients for fear of hemolysis.
Dosing :
0.5-1 mg IM in newborns to prevent haemorrhagic disease of the newborn.
Older children and Adults:
2.5-10 mg IM.
Adverse Effect :
Newborns and G 6 PD deficiency patients for fear of hemolysis.
Facial flushing, sweating, hemolysis.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
