Sometimes a sudden drop of the pulse occurs for seconds on
What is the differential diagnosis?
5
Expert Answer :
Infrequent missed beats are not uncommon in the neonatal period. In most cases they are benogn and due to isolated Premature ventricular contractions {PVC}. Most commonly they are idiopathic and disappear within 1-2 days. If the baby is clinically asymptomatic, in most cases they can be ignored if they disappear soon.
In some cases it is worthwhile to do an ECG {and rarely a Holter monitoring} to see their morphology and frequency. Rarely if the missed beats are at regular interval, it maybe due to second degree heart block which can be evident on an ECG. It may be necessary to rule out lupus erythematosus in the mother.
