Ambroxol
Mechanism :
Ambroxol is a mucolytic. It breaks down the acid mucopolysaccharide fibres which makes the sputum thinner and less viscous and therefore promotes mucus clearance. It also stimulates synthesis and release of surfactant by type II pneumocytes. The surfactant acts as an anti-glue factor by reducing the adhesion of mucus to the bronchial wall, in improving its transport and in providing protection against infection and irritating agents. It also facilitates expectoration and eases productive cough. Ambroxol also has a mild anaesthetic effect and therefore used to relieve the pain in sire throat/Pharyngitis.
