Secnidazole
Mechanism :
It is an antiprotozoal drug used in the treatment of intestinal amoebiasis, trichomonas and giardiasis. It is administered as a single dose.
Indication :
- Intestinal amoebiasis
- Giardiasis
- Trichomonal vaginitis
- Bacterial vaginosis
Contraindications :
Hypersensitivity, Avoid alcohol consumption while taking, Pregnancy, lactation.
Dosing :
Safety and efficacy is not established in children <18 years.
30 mg/kg as a single one dose PO. Max: 2 g.
Adverse Effect :
Nausea, mouth ulcer, stomach pain, hives, rashes and decreased white blood cell counts.
Interaction :
Warfarin: Potentiate anticoagulant effect of warfarin.
Disulfiram: Concurrent disulfiram may cause ant-abuse like effects.
Cimetidine: Prolongs halflife.
Hepatic Dose :
No dose adjustment recommended.
