Tacalcitol
Mechanism :
Tacalcitol is a vitamin D3 derivative. It binds to the keratinocyte vitamin D receptor to the same extent as the natural vitamin D3. It acts by normalising cell growth and development in the skin. It prevents the excessive growth rate of skin cells that leads to scaling of the skin characteristic of psoriasis.
Indication :
Contraindications :
Contraindicated in known hypersensitivity and in disorders of calcium metabolism, monitor serum calcium in patients at risk of hypercalcemia and in renal impairment.
Dosing :
12-18 years:
Apply sparingly at bedtime.
Adverse Effect :
Frequently seen adverse reactions include local skin reactions, itching, erythema, burning, paresthesia, hypercalcaemia, contact dermatitis, burning sensation and irritation in area of use.
Interaction :
Patients may take up 500 international units of vitamin D in multivitamin preparations. Ultra-violet light including sunlight may degrade tacalcitol, hence apply at bedtime.
Hepatic Dose :
No dosage adjustments are recommended.
