Mechanism :

It is a benzodiazepine group of drug used in the treatment of panic disorders and anxiety states.

Indication :

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Adjunctive therapy in the management of partial seizures
  • Symptomatic relief of acute alcohol withdrawal.

Contraindications :

Documented hypersensitivity, Breastfeeding, Narrow-angle glaucoma.

Dosing :

9-12 years:
3.75-7.5 mg/dose PO bd.
>12 years:
7.5 mg/dose PO 2-3 times daily.

Adverse Effect :

Drowsiness, confusion, depression, blurred vision.

Interaction :

1. with sodium oxybate: may increase risk of CNS and resp. depression, other adverse effects 2. with clarithromycin: may incr. benzodiazepine levels, risk of CNS depression, psychomotor impairment 3. with doxylamine: may increase risk of CNS depression, psychomotor impairment 4. with chloramphenicol: may increase benzodiazepine levels, risk of CNS depression, psychomotor impairment

Hepatic Dose :

Dose may have to be reduced or dosing interval may have to be increased due to impaired hepatic metabolism. Specific guidelines for dosage adjustment are not available.
